Stainless steel wire mesh is one of the most chemically and structurally stable wire mesh materials. This makes it widely used in industrial, architectural, filtration, decorative, food, and pharmaceutical applications.
However, the price difference between different grades of stainless steel can be quite significant. What causes this gap? And does it affect performance or durability?
In this article, FUDAS will explain the differences between commonly used stainless steel grades — T-304, T-316, T-316L, and T-430 — to help you choose the right stainless steel mesh for your project.
What Is Stainless Steel Wire Mesh?
1.Stainless steel wire mesh differs from ordinary wire mesh mainly in its material composition. It is made from an alloy that contains chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), which gives it greater chemical stability and corrosion resistance. This is why we call it “stainless.”
2.As a result, the main differences between grades like T-304, T-316, T-316L, and T-430 come down to the amount of chromium and nickel in the alloy.
3.Different element contents and alloy combinations result in different performance characteristics and also affect the overall cost.
T-304 Stainless Steel Mesh:

1.T-304 stainless steel mesh is made from an alloy containing approximately 18% chromium (Cr) and 8% nickel (Ni). This composition is commonly known as “18/8 stainless steel”, one of the most widely recognized and used stainless steels.
2.It provides excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in indoor and mildly corrosive outdoor environments. T-304 can withstand temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F) in continuous service and 925°C (1700°F) in intermittent service.
It is also the most commonly used grade of stainless steel wire mesh due to its balanced performance and availability. While the cost is higher than low-grade steels, it often requires little to no maintenance, making it cost-effective in the long run.
3.T-304 Application:
Food and beverage filtration (e.g. beer brewing)
General industrial screening
Heat-resistant baskets and trays
Water purification systems
Laboratory mesh sieving
T-316 Stainless Steel Mesh:

1.T-316 stainless steel mesh contains approximately 16–18% chromium (Cr), 10–14% nickel (Ni), and 2–3% molybdenum (Mo). The addition of molybdenum greatly enhances its resistance to chloride corrosion and acidic environments.
2.T-316 is often referred to as “marine grade stainless steel” due to its ability to withstand saltwater and chemical exposure. It can resist temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F).
While more expensive than T-304, it is ideal for harsh environments where corrosion is a critical concern.
3.T-316 Application:
Marine and coastal mesh structures
Chemical processing and storage
Pharmaceutical manufacturing
Desalination and saltwater filtration
Food-grade mesh in acidic environments
T-316L Stainless Steel Mesh:

1.T-316L stainless steel mesh has the same chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content as T-316, but with a lower carbon content (the “L” stands for “low carbon”). This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding and improves resistance to intergranular corrosion.
2.T-316L is ideal for applications requiring extensive welding or exposure to extreme chemical conditions. It retains the same temperature resistance as T-316 but is often preferred in precision engineering and chemical vessels.
3.T-316L Application:
Welded mesh structures in corrosive environments
High-purity chemical or pharmaceutical equipment
Marine filtration systems requiring welding
Acid-handling containers
Aerospace structural mesh
T-430 Stainless Steel Mesh:

1.T-430 stainless steel mesh contains about 16–18% chromium (Cr) but does not contain nickel. This makes it a ferritic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance in dry or mildly corrosive environments, but less resistant than T-304 or T-316.
2.T-430 is magnetic and more affordable, making it popular for indoor structural use, decorative panels, or low-moisture environments. However, it is not suitable for marine or highly acidic conditions.
3.T-430 Application:
Decorative mesh for indoor panels or ceilings
Ventilation grilles and covers
Appliance back panels or interior parts
Low-moisture food equipment
Dry industrial environments
